Description
This representation of Manjushri is rare, being almost exclusively of Nepalese origin, where he is revered as the progenitor of the whole Buddhist cosmos. In this version he has six pairs of arms, each representing one of the five Cosmic Buddhas and Vajrasattva. The two main hands in vyakarana mudra, Vairocana's gesture of exposition; the second pair in tarpana mudra thus pouring the ambrosia; the third pair in samadhi mudra holding the bowl; the fourth and fifth pairs probably originally held the attributes of the deity: the sword, the manuscript, the bow and arrow; the sixth pair stretched on top of the head in vijarachakra mudra, symbolising the Mount Meru, the centre of the world in Buddhist mythology. Nepalese art has Indian reminiscences and the style of this bronze evokes 13th century devotional figures, themselves probably influenced by Pala art.
