West Africa, Nigeria, Gwari or Nupe culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-built pottery jar of sizable, round-bottomed form with a spherical body, a squat neck, and a large, flared rim. Adorning the upper body are large circles and abstract, minimalist anthropoid figures against a horizontally-striated ground, and the lower body is embellished with crosshatching and parallel horizontal grooves as well as overlapping semicircular bands on the base. Size: 13.9" W x 17" H (35.3 cm x 43.2 cm)

Condition
