MURDER! PRESIDENT LINCOLN ASSASSINATED - 1865 MOURNING BROADSIDE POEM - DeWOLFE, April 19, 1865-Dated (Patriot's Day), Choice Crisp Extremely Fine.
April 19, 1865-Dated, Original 1865 Broadside with a poem on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, composed by George G.B. DeWolfe, (1835-1873) "the Wandering Poet, of Nashua, N.H.". Measures about 9-1/2" x 11-1/2", Never folded, Printed in deep black on crisp clean light tan wove period paper with full margins. Its boldly printed headline title shouts: "MURDER! / President LINCOLN Assassinated". The Poem follows, 20 lines of verse in 5 stanzas, mourning Lincoln's death, mentioning "the foul assassin", the "Slave lamenting". Dated at bottom, "April 19, Anno Domini 1865" - (being the date of Lincoln's funeral in Washington, DC.). Very Scarce - OCLC locates but two examples, no auction records located. However, EAHA sold a similar example in our April 20, 2021 Auction lot 240 selling at $1,800. One similar is known in the collection of the New Hampshire Historical Society. This example has excellent eye appeal and is perfect for display.
