George Washington Portrait Memorial Silk Ribbon Eagle with Banner "Nation's Gratitude" and "He still lives in the hearts of his Countrymen" Legends
c. 1832, Patriotic George Washington Portrait Memorial Silk Ribbon, Eagle with Banner vignette reading "Nation's Gratitude" and "He still lives in the hearts of his Countrymen" Legend below with American Flags, Fine.
A rarely seen George Washington Portrait Memorial Silk Ribbon measuring 5.75" long x 1.5" wide, black print on white silk with outer ruffled edge decoration. A small .5" teardrop shaped tear in center below the image affecting two words of the bottom legend and small thin split in the silk in the top field, as shown. The historic text below taken from: "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." These famous words about George Washington come from a eulogy written by Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee. Lee was a Major General in the Continental Army, member of the Continental Congress, governor of Virginia, father of the famous Civil War general Robert E. Lee, and close friend of George Washington.
