September 20, 1781 Connecticut Pay-Table-Office Receipt
September 20, 1781-Dated Revolutionary War, Connecticut Pay-Table-Office Receipt, to Preacher Eleazer Wales (1732-1794), Custom Housed, Choice Very Fine.
Partly-Printed Receipt Signed by Eleazer Wales and Finn Wadsworth as Committee Members, 1 page, measuring 6.5" x 3.5," ordering the Treasurer (John Lawrence) to "Pay unto Ralph Pomeroy, Esq. D.Q.M. or Order Two Pounds Lawful Silver Money, out of the Tax of Two Shillings and Six Pence on the pound, granted by the General Assembly in May last, and charge the State." Endorsed on the back by Ralph Pomeroy. Custom housed in a professionally made, clothbound binder with embossed gilt lettering reading, "STATE OF CONNECTICUT REVOLUTIONARY PAY DOCUMENT 1781" on the cover.
Eleazer Wales (1732-1794) studied medicine, and according to one account was practicing at Willington, Tolland County, Conn. in 1763. In May 1765 being then of Mansfield, in Windham County, Wales was licensed to "Preach" by the County Association of Ministers.
