Artemis Gallery is donating 100% of the Buyer's Premium from all lots sold in this auction to COMMUNITY FOOD SHARE. Each $1.00 donated = 3 meals!
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE; Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A collection of 3 fabulous hand-built pottery figures from ancient Mexican cultures, portraying semi-clothed and nude women. The Jalisco kneeling woman has globular breasts protruding from just inside rounded shoulders, and a lightly distended abdomen hanging over her bent legs. The tallest is a Colima "gingerbread" figure, a flattened form with genitalia and appliqued headdress and jewelry. The last is a stouter gingerbread type of figure, but this one is far heftier than the other with a thicker and stouter body / girth. An excellent group from the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition! Size of tall gingerbread figure: 4" W x 8.5" H (10.2 cm x 21.6 cm)
Ceramic figurines, such as these here, are among the most expressive and dramatic created in Mesoamerica. According to scholars of this tradition, such ceramic figures were the primary outlet for artistic expression for the shaft tomb cultures and there is little record of monumental architecture, stelae, or public art associated with these cultures.
Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
