Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A fine set of 2 glass vessels of vastly different forms. First is a squat jar with a flared rim and thick walls that were pattern-molded to create a series of vertical ribs, all formed from semi-translucent, yellow-green glass. Next is a tall and slender unguentarium - used for holding scented oils and perfumes - with a planar base, a piriform body with a slightly indented neckline, and a tall neck surmounted with a flared, in-folded rim. The walls are incredibly thin and delicate and exhibit soft turquoise hues. Size (bottle): 1.8" W x 3.2" H (4.6 cm x 8.1 cm); (unguentarium): 0.6" W x 3.9" H (1.5 cm x 9.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Virginia, USA collection, before 2000

Condition
Bottle has light pitting on exterior and micro-bubbling within glass matrix, and unguentarium has micro-bubbling within glass matrix. Each piece has light encrustations and some weathering film, otherwise both are intact and very good. Pontil marks on underside of bases. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Great preservation to overall forms and coloration.
