Japan,Muromachi Period
This pair of guardian figures would have been part of a set of four, each are a part of the Four Guardian Kings who would protect Buddha's realm in four directions. These figures are dressed in Chinese military costumes with fierce expressions, glass eyes, and Kamakura influenced poses.
Wood,Approx. 19 1/4" t x 9" w x 6 1/2" d.
Ex. collection of Judith Dowling, offered from the collection of a North Scituate, Rhode Island estate.
Calligraphy to back of sculptures.

Each with areas of paint loss, figure with raised hand loose on base, areas of minor wood chips to raised areas, general wear associated with age and use, otherwise display well.
