Description
"A Mountain Europa", "A Cumberland Vendetta" and "The Last Stetson", by John Fox, Jr., illustrated by Louis Loeb and F.C. Yohn, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1909. First edition with Scribner colophon on the copyright page [BAL 6258].

Hard boards, original publisher's green cloth with gold medallion on the front board, 5.1/4" x 7.3/4"; frontispiece protected by tissue, 279 pages + b/w 3 plates on glossy paper [all three plates are slightly foxed], gold upper page edges, some pages are rough opened, very good condition.

Three classic Western novelettes. Kentucky Mountains, a reality, more beautiful than the dreams of the protagonist is waiting for his arrival. The hopes and desires cherished by him are elucidated in a way that enthralls the reader. Life goes on and along the way it offers beauty and glory. This charming tale encapsulates the struggles and successes in a skillful manner.

These novels give a brief glimpse at the polarization between the remaining rugged independence of the pioneer spirit that survived in the hills of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee in 1900 and the comfortable affluent society that was developing in the Eastern big cities, and a beautiful romance between them.

John Fox Jr. (1862-1919) was an American journalist, novelist, and short story writer.
