THREE TSUBA (HAND GUARDS)
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th to mid-19th century
All shakudo, the first ovoid, finely cut in itozukashi ('thread-piercing') technique with sayagata (key-fret) patterns, the ryohitsu lined in gilt, 7.3cm (2 7/8in) high; the second mokkogata (four-lobed), pierced and chiselled in relief with chrysanthemums, paulownias, and hollyhocks, a lozenge-shaped area around the ryohitsu and nakago-ana finished in nanako, signed Choshu no ju Tomonobu, 7.5cm (2 15/16in) high; the third roughly circular, formed as a minogame (bushy-tailed turtle) and waves, finely engraved and with gilt details, 8.3cm (3¼in) high.
