Description
East Asia, Japan, late Edo Period, ca. early 19th century CE. A fine example of an iron tsuba, the hand guard from a traditional Japanese sword like a katana or wakizashi. The tsuba has deeply incised lines with inlaid brass on both sides and six five-pointed flower shapes within openwork circles, forming a motif of kikyo, the Japanese word for bellflowers. The opening for the tang is a long triangle which shows clear signs of use. The use of brass inlays and the kikyo motif indicate that this is Yoshiro style. Brass inlay (shinchu zogan) became popular prior to the Edo period and remained in use until the end of the samurai in the 1870s. Size: 2.95" L x 3.05" W (7.5 cm x 7.7 cm)
