Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
North America, United States, ca. late 20th century CE. This mosaic crockpot or jug is a wonderful piece of African American folk-art hand-made using sentimental items from a person's life to create a keepsake known as a memory jug. The artform comes from the tradition of decorating graves of the deceased - here the objects tell a story of a person's life. Seashells, buttons, costume jewelry, keys, bottle openers, miniature harmonica, ceramic tea fish, miniature pistols, and a king cake baby figure. An earthenware crockpot forms the base, covered with clay then each trinket pressed into the surface, preserving pieces of the person's life, which can then be passed down through generations. These items suggest to us that they belonged to a lively and extroverted woman! Size: 6" Diameter x 8" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
