Description
Small carved hardwood standing female figure with crested coiffure, possibly Senufo, with white beads and string around the neck. Offered together with a pair of blackened wood figures with large round foreheads and huge, bulging eyes, the necks with crosshatched carving, the arms close to the sides and ending in hoof shaped paddles held against the body. The third figure carved of stone, a columnar figure with peaked cap or coiffure, simple features, ringed neck, with no arms or legs. Possibly ritual figures. Tribe and country of origin not identified. All on custom gallery bases. The blackened figure is the tallest at approx. 7 1/2" (9 1/8" including base.) Provenance: Estate of Thomas McNemar, (1931-2020.) McNemar lived and collected throughout Central and West Africa in the 1960s and 70s. He established galleries of African Art in New York and San Francisco, selling to museums and public and private collections in the United States and Europe.
