Description
Comb carved with male and female figures with arms around one another's shoulders, standing on a rectangular base with allover incised squares. Significant damage, including the loss of the head of the female figure and four of the eight teeth broken. The collectors' notes document a nearly identical comb collected prior to 1966 in a Kassena village cluster in Tiakane in what was then Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso. Approx. 8 1/4" x 3 1/4".Provenance: Estate of Thomas McNemar, (1931-2020.) McNemar lived and collected throughout Central and West Africa in the 1960s and 70s. He established galleries of African Art in New York and San Francisco, selling to museums and public and private collections in the United States and Europe.
