Alaska United Gold Mining Co. Stock Certificate Signed by W. Alvord, as President
An Alaska United Gold Mining Company certificate, No. 7098, issued twenty shares ($5.00 each) of Capital Stock to the bearer. Signed "William Alvord" as President and "A. T. Corbus" as Secretary. 1p, measuring 10.5” x 10", San Francisco, dated November 1, 1895. Featuring a mining motif at the lower center. The stock has retained six tickets. With hole punches along the right side of the front. Transfer information present on verso. Paper loss from the hole punches. Flattened fold. Toning and minor soiling. One ticket appears to have been removed and then reattached with tape. Boldly signed.
William Alvord (1833-1904) was a leading figure in San Francisco, having come to the city in 1853. in 1867, he was elected President of the Pacific Rolling Mill Company, where he worked for twenty years. He was also elected as Mayor of San Francisco and president of the San Francisco Arm Association in 1871. He came to be president of the Alaska Gold Mining Company in 1893.
