Southern Currency & Bonds, 9 Pcs, Many Alabama-Related

A small group of financial and business documents, the majority of which relate to pre and post-Civil War Alabama, ca. 1837-1866. The archive of nine pieces includes checks, certificates of bank deposit, stock transfer certificates, bonds, and information regarding new state bank legislation. Please refer to catalog photos for more information regarding condition, which is generally very good to near fine. The largest piece measures 14" x 17" unfolded.

The lot is comprised of, in chronological order:

1. Check No. 4316 drawn on the Branch of the Bank of the State of Alabama at Mobile in the amount of $1,000 dated April 4, 1837. Endorsed verso, with expected cancellation marks. 9.25" x 4."

2-3. Two "Certificate of Deposite" [sic] slips from the Branch of the Bank of the State of Alabama at Montgomery, one in the amount of $1,200 dated January 9, 1840, and one in the amount of $702.39 dated January 16, 1840. Endorsed verso, with expected cancellation marks. 8.5" x 3.5."

4. Check No. 143 drawn on the Bank of the State of Alabama at Montgomery in the amount of $400 dated January 19, 1843. Uneven top edge, else near fine.

5-6. Two blank Transfer Certificates for stock shares of the Selma Insurance and Trust Company, partly printed on pale blue paper, ca. 1850s. Isolated edge darkening and uneven margins, else near fine. 10.125" x 7.5."

7. A contemporary copy of "An Act To further suspend Specie Payments of the Free Banks," approved December 7, 1861 and signed in print by Alabama Governor John Gill Shorter, President of the Senate R.M. Patton, and Speaker of the House of Representatives W.H. Crenshaw. Inscribed "J.C. Curry" below. Expected wear including ghost ink impressions. 7.875" x 10.75."

8. A 20-year 6% $1,000 Confederate States of America bond, No. 5006, registered at Richmond, Virginia on June 1, 1863. Signed by the Register of the Treasury and several other officials. With an attached sheet of 18 $60 "C.S. Cotton Coupon Loan" slips redeemable on January 1 of every year through 1883 (1.5 coupons have been removed.) Expected paper flaws including light folds to the onion skin paper, else near fine. 14" x 17."

9. A 20-year 8% State of Alabama bond, No. 110, in the amount of $100, dated July 2, 1866. Signed by the Governor, Comptroller, and State Treasurer, and bearing an orange seal at lower left. An attached sheet of 23 $4 coupons redeemable on the first Mondays of January and July of every year through July 1886 (two coupons have been removed.) With expected wear including paper folds, toning, hole punches, star and ink cancellation marks, else good to very good. 16.75" x 19."
