Edwin Stevens Deed Signed for Property Bought by Philadelphia & Trenton RR Co.Â
An oversized two-page deed signed twice by Edwin A. Stevens as "E. A. Stevens." 2pp of vellum, measuring 26.75" x 25" and 26.75" x 29", Philadelphia, dated March 2, 1859. The two pages are nicely bound at the bottom with yellow ribbon and with two red wax seals. With flattened folds and creasing. Faint edge soiling. Boldly signed, overall very fine.
The indenture is between Stevens and his wife, Martha B., and the Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad Company, conveying "All those messuages or tenements stores wharf and lot or piece of ground situate at the South-East corner of Walnut Street and Water Street in the said City of Philadelphia…" for the sum of $23,585.05. Countersigned by Steven's wife and witnessed by Washington Q. Morton and George W. Morton, Mayor of Hoboken.Â
Edwin Augustus Stevens (1795-1868) was an American engineer and inventor, known for the "Stevens Plow", the "two-horse dump wagon", the "closed fireroom" system, and the "vestibule car" for the Camden and Amboy Railroad. Stevens and his brother, Robert, gained the charter for the Camden and Amboy Railroad and Transportation Co. in 1830. The company merged with the Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad six years later.
