Provenance:
The estate of Ronald J. Palagi (1947-2022) Omaha, Nebraska, purchased from Merrill Chase Galleries.
Manuel Robbe was a noted French artist specializing in the female during the belle epoque. He was fluent in pastels, watercolors and print making. Robbe was influenced by the most of the important nineteenth century artists such as Degas, Renoir, Legrand, Chahine and Lautrec. He exhibited regularly at the Salons of Societe des Artistes Francais and in 1900, he received a bronze medal at the World’s Fair. The offered lot would appear to be the final study for Robbe's poster titled Les Corsets Le Furet. Large scale works by Robbe such as the offered lot, are quite rare; most of the studies for his graphics worked were destroyed or lost. During WWI Robbe was a pilot in the French air force and was awardedthe Croix de Guerrewith citations.
