Large 15th c. French Boucicaut-style illuminated Missal page on vellum; features Mary and Jesus and Three Magi bearing gifts; a beautiful example of late Medieval book art
Beautifully decorated large foglio-sized illuminated page with text featuring a miniature painting of the Three Magi bearing gifts to Mary and Baby Jesus. Possibly from the Cistercian monastery workshop at Neubourg in Alsace, France; possibly by the same hand (but not from the same text) as the page in the previous lot.
Recto:
Features large upper and lower margin in foliage, flowers designed around a central Sphinx-like medieval man with a large hat drollery illustration on top margin, and around a dragon-like monster drollery in the bottom margin—all Boucicaut style—in green, blue, red, pink, and gold with black outline; 21 lines of text in Gothic Latin script drawn in black and red ink in two vertical columns; the miniature painting (5 lines tall) features the a seated Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus and the Three Magi offering gifts; the page also features five large historiated initials (P, D, I, M, H) in gold outlined in black and with white tracing on blue and brown grounds.
