Description
Chinese, possibly from 18th century, Qing dynasty. Carved from a white nephrite jade with even white inclusions, modeled after an archaic bronze hu vessel in flattened form, with ruyi head handlessuspending loose rings. The body decorated with a band of taotie mask carved in low relief and the shoulder with stylized upright lappets deceoration. The cover carved with archaic leaves and ruyi heads with a chrysanthemum finial to thetop. H. with cover: 22.2 cm (8 3/4 in.) Provenance: Purchased in WWII in Italy and heldprivately in the family Having a repair to one handle. Condition report available upon request. Condition
One handle has an old break and a crude glew although easily restorable to a professional invisible finish. The jade is slightly mottled in a white / cream / light yellow colour. Very well carved surface, well carved interior. Provenance: from a local Toronto home, acquired from his late father who purchased in Italy during WWII.
