Original canvas. There are several small pinholes and some associated spots of paint loss to the extreme lower edge of the canvas, and a small tear to the extreme upper edge, where the canvas wraps around the stretcher, measuring approximately 1cm. There is some rubbing to the extreme edges of the canvas, with a few spots of associated paint loss. There is a very small spot of paint loss to the upper layer of pigment to the cheek of the sitter, visible only on close inspection. There is an extremely light scuff to the waist of the black dress and a light scratch to the right arm of the chair, measuring approximately 2cm. There is some light surface dirt. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in very good overall condition.

Ultra-violet light reveals some small areas of fluorescence to the background, but these are not thought to be indicative of retouching.
