Yohji Yamamoto began his career in fashion as the anonymous creator behind his Tokyo brand "Y's" in 1970. Eleven years after the fact, his name echoed through Paris as the harbinger of the 80's urban aesthetic: flowing, tattered, black garments. The haphazard quality, unfinished quality to Yamamoto's work alludes to deconstruction yet roots in the Japanese notion of wabi-sabi, the aesthetic of incompleteness, imperfection, and poverty. His designs both transcend gender and imply beauty in degradation, though the marvel of Yamamoto's draping has yet to erode with time.
