Note:
Although Hardy is primarily known for hunting scenes, he turned towards biblical scenes later in his life, as represented in the present lot. The East Preston, Littlehampton label to the stretcher locates the work to West Sussex, where Hardy moved in 1909 to create a series of commissioned murals for the 700-year celebration of the church of St. Mary the Virgin, Climping in Littlehampton.
