Gooch wrote this work following her return to the US after having lived in Saltillo, Mexico for seven years. The book describes her experiences living in Mexico as someone who knew nothing about the culture or people prior to moving there. This story arc from ignorance to understanding provides a unique approach to this type of work and thus contributed greatly to the success of the title following its publishing in 1887.
