Description
Gouache & watercolor. Signed lower right & titled. Dimensions: 11" x 8 1/4". Framed under glass. A graduate of both Brown & RISD, Dyer embraced the "Old style English method of watercolor painting" which he then adapted using both gouache and transparent washes on gray/earth toned watercolor sheets. The artist considered this technique paramount to his successful watercolors. Nearly annnual sojourns to Europe, especially Italy, afforded Dyer vistas for an American audience hungry for European scenes. Caudebec is a preserved medieval town in Normandy. Dyer wrote “Caudebec, is the most charmingly quaint and picturesque town in all Europe. Picture to yourself a town in the 20th century where the matters, customs and houses are still almost mediaeval: rushing streams of water flow underneath dark, mysterious Norman buildings, and where age have given to the whole town a glorious greening gray tone”.
