Description
Watercolor & gouache on paper. H. Anthony Dyer (1872-1943). New frame: 24" x 20". It was in the 16th century that tulips were imported to Holland from the Ottoman Empire (present-day Turkey). Just a few years after arriving in Holland, tulips became the most sought-after commodity in the entire Netherlands. Dyer captures how the tulips were transported by boat in the late 19th century. Today tourists still flock to Holland to see the tulips in bloom. Few Rhode Island artists enjoyed the popularity & patronage that Dyer had in his lifetime and since. Prefering the "old-style English method of watercolor painting", Dyer was adept at using gouache & transparent washes on grey/earth toned sheets. His yearly travels brought popular European vistas back to his patrons. "For him the doorways of the Old World open up illimitable vistas of loveliness" (W. Alden Brown).
