Etcher: John Frederick Lewis (British, 1804–1876).
Artist: after Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (Leiden, 15 July 1606 – Amsterdam, 4 October 1669).

Condition: good.; Inscription content: Lettered with Rembrandt's signature at top left: "Rembrandt', around side of image at lower left: 'copied by J F. Lewis', and below image: "Qúem pia mirari plebes, qúem castra solebant, / damnare et mores aula coacta súos. / Jactatús múltum, nec tantum fractús ab annis / WTENBOGARDUS sic túús, Haga, redit. / H. Grotius [The (worldly) court was forced to condemn the man so admired by the pious, the soldiers and the court itself, and denounce his convictions. The Hague, after much wandering your fellow townsman Uytenbogaert returns, withered, not by the years alone. Hugo de Groot.]".; The Remonstrants (or the Remonstrant Brotherhood) is a Protestant movement that had split from the Dutch Reformed Church in the early 17th century. The early Remonstrants supported Jacobus Arminius, and after his death, continued to maintain his original views called Arminianism against the proponents of Calvinism. Condemned by the synod of Dort (1618–19), the Remonstrants remained in a small minority in the Netherlands. In the middle of the 19th century, the Remonstrant Brotherhood was influenced by the liberal Dutch theological movement.
Jan Uytenbogaert gave to the Remonstrants a catechism and regulated their church order.
