Sheet: 40.5" H x 27" W
Provenance: Property of an estate, Beverly Hills, CA
Literature: Feldman & Schellmann II.110
Notes: In 1974, Warhol produced a suite of flower screenprints based on images of flowers found in a wallpaper catalog called "Interpretive Flower Designs.?" The "Flowers (Hand Colored)"? portfolio was originally sold as a suite of ten prints and published by Peter M. Brant in collaboration with Castelli Graphics and Multiples Inc. in two variations. The first consisted of black and white prints, while each work found in the deluxe edition was hand-colored with Dr. Martin's aniline watercolor, dye-making each piece a unique color variation.
Warhol depicted flowers in his work across all stages of his career. The "Flowers (Hand Colored)" portfolio, in contrast to the editions that he released in the mid-1960s, demonstrates Warhol's ability to render a very traditional subject with a contemporary perspective.
