Description
Two Papua New Guinea ceremonial masks. Carved wooden masks with dark painted and limewash finish, elongated faces with incised and cowrie shell decoration. Smaller from Kivenamous Village, Karawari River, and larger from Kandangai Village, Sepik River, both in East Sepik Province. Some wear to finish and damage to wood, smaller with large shrinkage crack, larger with chip to upper mask and glued repair to eye. ESTIMATE $200-300 PROVENANCE: From the Solomon collection in Wolverine Lake, Michigan. Purchased in respective PNG locations in 1978-1980.
