[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. A strand of hair attributed to Abraham Lincoln and wood fragments from the scaffold used in the execution of the Lincoln conspirators
secured as a souvenir by a soldier acting as a guard serving in the 1st US Veteran Volunteers.
8 x 6 in. display containing: 1 strand of hair attributed as Abraham Lincoln's, approx. 1/2 in. long [left]. -- 1865 3 cent piece [center]. -- 1/2 x 1/2 in. wooden fragment from the scaffold used in the execution of the Lincoln conspirators, kept by a soldier acting as a guard serving in the 1st United States Veteran Volunteers [right]. With copy of image showing the hanging of Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt in the yard of the Old Arsenal Penitentiary in Washington, DC, on 7 July 1865, and typed descriptive label furnished by Carroll J. Delery III.
[With:] Multiple fragments of wood housed in plastic bags with modern notations, presumably in the hand of Carroll J. Delery III, attributing the wood as relic wood taken from the scaffold used to execute the Lincoln conspirators, acquired by the same guard from the 1st US Veteran Volunteers.
No further documentation or certificate of authenticity accompanies the lot.
