In describing his art and his motivation, Sylvain Coulombe has stated: “I try to find those who hide behind abstract landscapes. Characters, mysterious and unreal, which are define by deep lines, such as the one that the time cracks and digs to leave behind traces of his passage, its perseverance, its evolution.”

Born Montreal in 1971, Coulombe sites his interest in the architectural designs of Gaudi and the Bauhaus School, and his studies in environmental design as his major influences. As an evolving and developing artist, Coulombe was not satisfied with the limitations of working on canvas and began to seek out alternate materials to use for the surface of his paintings. Working on a wood panel enabled him to use a wider variety of techniques in creating his haunting characters, representing the human form in a fashion that is curious and strikingly vivid, delivering a surrealist approach to his portraiture. His works appear almost monochrome at first, but upon close examination colors emerge. Using techniques of handling materials borrowed from sculpture, and applying several successive layers of acrylic, Coulombe literally sculpts his work, bringing to life a universe at times dark, at times luminous.
