Alexander Calder was an American sculptor best known for his innovative kinetic Mobiles, his static Stabiles, and his monumental outdoor public sculptures. In addition to his sculptures, Calder painted throughout his career, beginning in the early 1920s. His study of printmaking led to creating illustrations for books and journals, including his series of animal drawings for a 1931 publication of Aesop’s fables. As Calder’s sculpture moved into abstraction in the 1930’s so did his paintings and prints, with the thin lines from his drawings evolving into geometric shapes and amorphous forms, often evoking the same sense of movement as the whirling elements of Calder’s Mobiles. The lithograph offered here, “Spirals,” with its spiraling forms, is an excellent and representative example of Calder’s work in this medium.
Comment: Lithograph has slipped inside frame and will need to be re-hinged
