Besides illustrating advertisements for a variety of products, Steinlen was famous for his posters of cabaret and music hall performers. This etching, depicting a young woman (“Midinette”) struggling with her umbrella as she runs through the rain (“Trottin sout la pluie”) exhibits the intimacy and immediacy that often marks Steinlen’s work.
