Art nouveau painter and printmaker, Theophile Steinlen, gained acclaim for his illustrations featured in various magazines, journals, and advertisement posters. His painted and drawn street scenes, often depicted working women, such as The Laundresses, Les Deux Jeunes Filles, and The Proletarians. Many of these street scenes contain crowded frames that hint at the world behind the subjects, and employ a darker color palette than the vivid tones that grace many of his prints and posters.
