Pierre Bonnard’s notable membership in The Nabis, an artistic collective that broke away from the classical and academic tradition, was his early introduction into new, decorative arts. After attending an exposition of works by Utamaro and Hiroshige in 1893, Bonnard became enamored with Japanese graphic arts and it influenced the work that followed greatly. He delved into bold, graphic lithographs and paintings which earned him the nickname Le Nabis le trés japonard, translating to the Japanese Nabis, or Prophet. In 1894, Bonnard shifted his creative attention to urban scenes of life in Paris.

Femme au Parapluie is an interesting blend of both the subjects and form that inspired Bonnard at that time. The graphic, bold blocks and splash of red in the cheeks utilized in Femme au Parapluie hints at japanese graphic art origins. It shares a likeness with many of his other lithographs, such as Le Japon Artistique,The Little Laundress, and Promenade des Nourrices, Frise des Fiacres — the two former pieces also featuring a woman with an umbrella.
