Rufus King was the namesake and paternal grandson of Constitution Signer Rufus King (1755-1827). The younger Rufus King served as the Adjutant General of the New York State Militia from 1839-1843. During the Civil War, King commanded a division in the Army of the Potomac but was invalided because of epileptic seizures. He later served in military governance and garrison duty roles. King served as U.S. Minister to the Papal States from 1864-1867.
Historical records confirm that Isaac I. Platt (1802-1866), a lifelong resident of Dutchess County, New York, led the 2nd Brigade of Cavalry in the New York State Militia in the 1840s.
