CSA Col. C. C. Crews Signed Tri-Monthly Return with Available Troops
A partially-printed Confederate Tri-Monthly Return, signed "C. C. Crews Col." and countersigned by Lt. Colonel Samuel H. Hawkins.1p, measuring 9" x 23.5", Barnwell District, South Carolina, dated February 4, 1865. A full report of the available fighting force of Crews' Brigade of Allen's Division, including First Georgia, Second Georgia, Third Georgia, Avery's Fourth Georgia, Clinch's Fourth Georgia, and Sixth Georgia. A note on the side reads: "E.M. captured since last report & 7 then reported absent with leave since reported as prisoners of war." The document has flattened folds, with light toning and soiling. Several holes at the lower margin with dampstaining. Boldly signed.
Charles Constantine Crews (1829-1887) was an attorney, physician, railroad executive, and Confederate officer. He served in the majority of the Western Theater cavalry campaigns under Major General Joseph Wheeler, leading the 2nd Georgia Cavalry. After the war, he became Treasurer of the Bainbridge, Cuthbert and Columbus Railroad Company.
