South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union in December 1860, in turn becoming one of the founding states of the Confederacy in February 1861. In total, South Carolina would provide approximately 60,000 troops to the Confederate army and acted as a valuable asset due to the state's streamlined railways. Following the events of the war and after meeting the requirements of Reconstruction, including ratifying amendments to the US Constitution to abolish slavery and grant citizenship to former slaves, South Carolina's representatives were readmitted to Congress. The state was fully restored to the United States on July 9, 1868.
