Lovely Photo Pair Featuring Actress Charlotte Cushman & African American Woman
A pair of photos, depicting American actress Charlotte Cushman and an unidentified woman of African American descent. Light areas of scattered foxing to both pieces, with minor creases and clipped edges, else very good condition.
The lot includes:
1. Actress Charlotte Cushman cabinet card, 4.25" x 6.5", ca. 1870, New York, NY. Image depicting notable twentieth-century Tragedienne and queer figure Charlotte Cushman (1816-1876), who became internationally known for her ability to play both male and female roles. Her career took off in 1839 when, alongside her sister Susan as Juliet, Cushman starred as Romeo in Shakespeare's iconic play. Union spy and fellow actress Pauline Cushman (born Harriet Wood) likely adopted her stage name in homage to Charlotte.
2. CDV depicting African American woman with likely connections to slavery, 2.5" x 4", Coatesville, PA, undated. Published by the J.B. Gibson Photography studio.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
