Description
1832 New York American INDIANS Revolutionary WAR Washington Irving New Amsterdam
Written under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker, Washington Irvings “A History of New York” is a political satire that describes the history of New York from the earliest times.
Interestingly, the successful and unique promotion of this work was a key catalyst in launching Irvings career. An elaborate hoax was put into place by Irving himself. He informed all local media that the “well-known Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker had disappeared from his hotel.” Later Irving announced that if he remained unfound, Irving would publish a manuscript left behind by Knickerbocker. Irvings plan worked perfectly as most of the public believed his ruse. Irving would later reveal that it had all been made up and, despite the playful deception, his story had gained enough notoriety that the book was an immediate success.
