Description
1784 1st ed History of New Hampshire Belknap INDIANS Revolutionary WAR Americana

The first extensive history of New Hampshire!

Jeremy Belknap was an 18th-century American historian from New Hampshire who is chiefly remembered for his account of New Hampshire, a work that was a result of him traveling throughout the state and gathering notes on history, geography, and events. First published in 1784, ‘History of New Hampshire’ was the first extensive history of New Hampshire, and according to Streeter, is ‘one of the most important 18th-century American histories.’ However, many notable names were impressed by Belknap’s work. Alexis de Tocqueville is quoted as saying “The reader of Belknap will find more general ideas and more strength of thought, than are to be met with in other American historians.”

This landmark work was published in three volumes over the course nine years. The first two volumes deal exclusively with New Hampshire history, and the third focuses on geography, natural history, wars, founding fathers, Indians, Puritans, and New England society.

Note that his three volume set has varying imprints. This is not uncommon. According to Sabin, this is expected.
