Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 1000 to 1200 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished blackware pottery vessel shaped like a human head. The visage has squinting eyes and is grinning and frowning simultaneously, perhaps exemplifying the duality of man or perhaps depicting a physical deformity. A petite figure on the handle behind the conical spout has incised hands and wears a tumi-shaped crown. Size: 4" W x 6" H (10.2 cm x 15.2 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.

Professional repair and restoration to foot and spout tip, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Light fading to black color, with minor softening to some finer details, and light earthen deposits. Nice preservation to overall form of portrait head. TL drill holes beneath base of vessel and headdress of face on handle.
