Item Details
Description
Western Europe, Italy, Venice, ca. 19th century CE; West Africa, Nigeria, Mali, or Ghana, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A collection of European glass trade beads and African made brass, shell, and seed beads that have assembled and strung as necklaces. The glass beaded necklace has dozens of petite black disc beads with cobalt blue and green evenly spaced along the strand and 6 large millefiori beads with an African brass bell and ring as the central pendant. The second necklace is comprised of seed pods with brass spacers, pairs of cowrie shells, and a brass teardrop bell pendant. These 2 necklaces are wearable with modern wire components and a push clasp on the shell strand. The necklace comprised entirely of brass has an older cord and is not wearable as is but could be restrung. All three are of similar lengths. Size (strands doubled): 28" L (71.1 cm); (brass bell): 1.5" L x 0.75" W (3.8 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

Condition
Brass beaded necklace is strung on a vintage cord that is fraying on the knotted end, and we recommend restringing this necklace before wearing. Green patina and age expected wear to some beads. Cowrie shell necklace is strung in modern times and wearable beads are intact and bell emits sound. Millefiori necklace is strung in modern times and has chips and nicks to large millefiori beads and losses to brass bell, but still emits sound. Wearable and overall good condition.
