Description
Four Japanese Antique Woodblock Prints, dating from the early 20th century, are probably reprints from a series depicting travelers throughout Japan. Scenes of landscape, merchant street and restaurant are featured in three of the prints. The fourth describes the hubbub of city life on one of Edo's bridges--possibly the Nihonbashi. Food Vendors call to potential customers. Parents with their child are included among the travelers. The men dressed in black coats are probably part of a daimyo procession traveling into Edo. Daimyo were required to maintain a home in the capital as well as in their home province. Nihonbashi, still a landmark in modern Tokyo, originally was constructed in the early 17th century to connect the banks of the Nihonbashi River. It is frequently featured in many Ukiyo-e prints.
