4 Japanese Prints from 53 Stations of the Tokaido: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) are from the estate of Katsuko Fujikado-Lee, an Ohara School Grandmaster who lived in Washington D.C. Proceeds from the sale will go to the North American Ohara Teacher's Association in her memory.
The four prints are from Hiroshige's famous series illustrating the rest stops or stations along the Tokaido Road that connected Kyoto and Edo (present day Tokyo). Printed during 1833-34, the series was inspired by a trip Hiroshige took in 1832, This lot features: the 39th Station Chiryu with horses grazing in a field near the road; the 43rd Station Yokkaichi where a traveler retrieves his windblown hat; 51st Station Ishibe where travelers appear to ask for directions; 53rd Station Otsu where travelers with heavily-laden wagons approach a well. Probably reprints made during the early 20th century, they demonstrate the continued popularity of the series long after the original printing.
Dimensions: Prints: L. 13 " x 8 1/2"; Framed: 17 1/4 " x 11 1/2 " Condition: Some fading from light exposure.
