With a two-page inscription on the half-title incorporating a self-portrait, drawn in red and blue crayon (with a portion on one page in ballpoint); the inscription on the verso of the front free endpaper "Pour/S. Hurok/en bon/souvenir [with a text in Russian]" in crayon, written within a roughly sketched easel in ballpoint; the half-title opposite with a portrait of Chagall with a palette, dated N.J. 1966 4/5 and signed Marc Chagall. Publisher's tan cloth printed in black in dust jacket. 11 5/8 x 8 1/8 inches (29.5 x 20.5 cm); 775, [1] pp., plates. A few very short tears to the jacket, the book itself with only minimal wear. Book stamp of Sol Hurok on recto of front free endpaper.

Hurok, the great impresario of music and dance, was born Solomon Izrailevich Gurkov in Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire; Chagall was born in Lithuania (now Belarus). The two knew each other well; they had worked together as early as 1945, on The Firebird.
