Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 19th century CE. This is a sizable cast-brass box that is decorated with a repousse bodhisattva upon the lid. The rectangular vessel is cast from two parts - the box and lid - each with a thin lip that fits flush together. The inside of the lid face is hammered and molded to create the deity on the obverse - standing upon a pedestal, the figure holds a lotus flower in is surrounded by an aureole and flames. This is likely the bodhisattva of Compassion known as Avalokiteshvara, and he is often called Padmapani, or "Lotus-in-Hand." Scrolling foliate and vegetal motifs radiate from around the figure. The surfaces are covered with a rich green patina, and such a box may have been used to store spices or other precious items. Size (w/ lid): 6.2" L x 13.125" W x 2.875" H (15.7 cm x 33.3 cm x 7.3 cm)
