Description
East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built ceramic jar decorated with a complex black- and red-pigmented geometric pattern of broad circles with cross-hatched patterns within, hash marks within the rim, leafy motifs around the rim exterior, and an undecorated base. The vessel is defined by a flat base, a rotund body with a sloping shoulder, a squat neck with a flared rim, and a pair of applied strap handles boasting segmented patterns. This piece is from the very early pottery tradition found at various archaeological sites along the Yellow River basin spanning from modern-day Gansu Province in northwest China to Henan Province in central China. Size: 6.25" W x 4.75" H (15.9 cm x 12.1 cm).

Condition
Small loss to rim, minor nicks to base, body, handles, and rim, and light fading to some areas of pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits and light root marks throughout.
