Description
South Asia, Northern India, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden female figure standing upon an integral pedestal, painted in bright yellow and green hues. She wears a skirt incised with linear patterning, but is otherwise nude from the waist up, and has oversized almond shaped eyes and hair pulled back in a bun. This lady may have been carved in celebration of the Gangaur festival, a celebration of women and fertility. Size: 6.75" L x 6" W x 20.5" H (17.1 cm x 15.2 cm x 52.1 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
