This very fine and elaborately hand carved chair appears to have been made in China. It may have been a custom ordered piece and it may have been meant for an abbess in a Buddhist monastery or large Buddhist temple. It may have been a custom piece for a very wealthy Chinese lady. We have never seen anything like it before.

The chair has very fine and highly polished detailing. There are Chinese style lappets finely carved around the seat edges. A phoenix rises with wings spread within a medallion on the reticulated back, with her front head and breast appearing on the front of the medallion and her rump and legs carved onto the back of the medallion. There are lotus flowers carved in various places. The seat is removable, fitted with springs and is upholstered in very beautiful and expensive, old, Chinese, hand cut, silk velvet. All probably 19th century.

Quite a remarkable chair that would look really wonderful in the home library or study of any fine home.
